Best/easiest software to create a ZK on ios

Could anyone point me in the right direction for a simple app that would work well for a ZK on an ipad?
Unfortunately my mac is out of commission and am getting a new one within the next few months. I am unfortunately not as tech savvy as most people on here and do not understand much of the terminology. So I want to focus on trying to learn the ZK system to and for now limit having to learn technical terms. I will definitely be downloading the archive once I have my Mac. IA writer seems to be the app of choice. I am open to any suggestions. Thank you in advance.

  • Give 1writer a look. I’ve been pretty happy with it, and it is pretty simple.

  • @aroddick thank you. I will definitely give it a try.

  • Take a look at Bear as well.

  • I have been spending time with iA Writer.

Here is a blog post about it:
https://zettelkasten.de/posts/ia-writer-zettelkasten/ pointing to a review of using it as a zettelkasten.

There is also a follow up post on Lorenzo's site to that post:

Also I found this post helpful:

I have used Bear, 1Writer, and iA Write. They all have strengths and weakness.

  • @kevin @MikeBraddock thank you for your input. Thanks for the links Mike I have read the ia writer post and it sounds like what I need. Kevin I will be looking at Bear as well.

Here is a comment where I talked about using Bear:

Eventually, Bear became cluttered with collecting stuff and notes. I still use it as such, but now I am working on using The Archive and iA Writer and/or 1Writer (they both point to my archive folder) for Zettelnautishness or is it Zettelishness? Still figuring it out.

I use Drafts and a Send to iA Writer action for tossing things quickly into the IOS to an inbox tag.

  • Just a note that iwriter does not play with Dropbox -- sounds like it isn't an issue for you, but may be an issue for others (like me!).

  • Apparently, DEVONthink has some followers on the forums as well when it comes to iOS use: https://forum.zettelkasten.de/discussion/930/devonthink-as-a-zettelkasten-note-archive

Hi Mike! When you say that you are still using bear, do you mean that you’re still using the collected material or that you are still using it for non-Zettel notes?

  • I use Bear for both. Then selectively pull and process notes into The Archive as Zettels as need or as something peaks my interest in that direction.

Look here and see if this helps.

  • @MikeBraddock how do I create a template in iA writer so that I do not have to type at the beginning of every Zettel Every time, the following:

    Title:
    ID
    Tags
    Reference

    On macOS:

    1. Copy the text you want to the clipboard.
    2. Open Text replacement in system preference.
    3. Add a new Text replacement string you want to use as a trigger. I used ..zh.
    4. Paste the clipboard text from step 1as the With string.

Shortly thereafter the Text replacement string will be available on IOS.
When you type your trigger string in iA Writer on IOS it should come up in the suggestions, much like omw does for On my way!.

  • Thank you Mike. I really appreciate it.

  • @MikeBraddock thank you. This can only be done on mac to affect the change on ios?

  • @VDL1516 you can’t include the newlines if you do it directly on IOS. I tired and only got it to work via the Mac.

Once I got it to work via the Mac I quit researching how to include the newlines returns directly on IOS. There may be a direct IOS solution but would need to research that more.

  • @MikeBraddock ok great. I appreciate it. If I find anything out on my end with ios I will let you know.

    I can vouch for Evernote.

EDIT: Thinking about it a moment longer: I will take it back somewhat. Because I only use it on my phone as a scratchpad. But for this it works quite well.

  • @matti thanks for the input. I have to read further into your post on it. Do you use it on ipad as well?

  • @VDL1516 Haven‘t used it on the iPad for a while to be completely honest. I kinda regret half reading the thread title and claiming Evernote would be a good fit for you. Disregard.

  • @matti no worries

  • Installed 1Writer too to see how it compares to iA Writer which I’ve used in the past before they got ride of Dropbox integration...

iA Writer works well for me but have used 1Writer, which is also good. Will experiment with Devonthink 'On The Go'.

  • @VDL1516

I totally forgot about the TextExpander keyboard for IOS.

    Sorry about that.

  • @MikeBraddock thank you so much. Going to try it out.

  • @MikeBraddock and @VDL1516 it is possible to use multiple line text replacement in native iOS, but it requires a Mac to start. See this article by Dr. Drang for details.

  • @Larry where would we all be without Dr. Drang! -Thanks.

  • @Larry thank you
