[Plug-In] Forum Mentions Plugin

edited November 19 in Plug-In Showcase

I've been practicing. I am recoding a shell script to extract all the mentions of forum participants. A few months ago, I showed an example written as a shell script inside the folded text "Mentions of forum members in my zettelkasten" in the forum post Share with us what is happening in your ZK this week. July 5, 2024—Zettelkasten Forum.

Here is the output from the plugin (cut off).

This is a full summary of all the mentions.

The Plugin

A little explaining is necessary.
The plugin includes a file created by the mention_list.js script, which is used to find all the forum members. This file is explicitly called in the main.js. This file needs to be in your ZK. Rename it how you want, then refactor the main.js. When I ran mention_list.js, it was messy, with examples where I noted Python decorators and a couple of spelling errors. It took 2 minutes of manual cleanup. Also included in the bundle is the old shell script. If this is too confusing, blame my inability to be clear. Ask any questions, and offer any suggestions for improvement.

My zettelkasten is for my ideas, not the ideas of others. I don’t want to waste my time tinkering with my ZK; I’d rather dive into the work itself. My peak cognition is behind me. One day soon, I will read my last book, write my last note, eat my last meal, and kiss my sweetie for the last time.

  • Has anyone taken a stab at reworking this plugin? I’m really curious about how you tailored it for your archives! I’d love to see the results and hear all about your experience. It could give me some great insights as I ponder future plugins!

  • I believe a have @Will a couple of times in a reference of a quote, but not as many forum mentions in my notes as you do :)

One suggestion, which is tailored to how The Archive works internally but doesn't work well with other apps, is to make the @-names clickable with a link: [[@Will]] mentioned X times

  • I'm surprised. I would have thought you'd have captured many ideas from various discussions on the forums and mentioned the members.

I've found the discussions on the forum to be a rich source of fodder for my ZK.

Anyway, I've incorporated your suggestion to add the clickable link and removed all the underlying notes in the resulting Mentions note.

This is a new note, even though I can't update the timestamp. I keep reusing the notes so I don't clutter up things.

I like the look of this note, but its utility is a question. If I were searching, for example, for a reference to a post comment but couldn't remember who it was from, I'd have to click around a bunch of names before I say it. Including each user's list of notes would facilitate a simple text search of the note for the correct hit.
