ELI5 sync app data (eg saved searches) across apple devices

I am really enjoying this app. Obsidian ADHD overwhelm to something calm and clean.

I tested it on my MacBook and now I have it on my iMac synced by dropbox, but I can't find a way to sync my data (like Zotero ) across the devices. It's probably very simple but I can't see it right now.

Thanks for any help :)

  • I'm in the wrong bit. Hello! I'm a writer and educator in UK. I have a PhD and have been published in creative and academic places. I am so glad to have found this app and the wider community around it.

Welcome to the forum (if this is your first time)!

I'm not sure where you problem lies - can you be more specific? Is it just a problem of having Dropbox sync across your devices? If so, do you have Dropbox set up on all devices? On each device, is Dropbox set up to sync your ZK folder?

  • Thanks for your reply. Yes, first post

So I have 2 machines running different instances of The Archive app.
Both can open my .md library through dropbox.

On my MacBook, saved searches are currently helping me organise my thoughts. I'd like to know how to sync the saved searches and theme data, etc, as the iMac version is a clean install.

I'm used to obsidian where the vault folder holds the files and the data together (the latter in hidden files). Also I just set up Zotero to sync library over DB and data files on its own. I followed some guides online for this.

Maybe this app can't sync settings like this, and that's fine -- perhaps even desirable as I figure out how far I can get from the over-slick apps that have slowly poisoned my creative process over the last few years. I can make the set-up of these as part of the more measured practice I'm yearning for!

But (hypocrisy, lol!) I also don't want to be copying over settings manually if there is another way...

  • @awsed I have used The Archive on several computers, all accessing the same dropbox folder, without any trouble. However, I haven't run multiple instances at the same time. For example, I work on my home computer, close The Archive, then open it on my work computer and continue working on that.

So - it may be an issue of having multiple instances of The Archive functioning at the same time on different computers.

We might have to ask @ctietze to address this question

That is what I want to do and I feel I'm missing something super basic here. Maybe I misused the word instance. I mean two versions of the same app.

Is your saved search structure preserved across both apps?

I have to save whatever searches I want in the app on each computer (but my searches are pretty basic). The big advantage is using the same Dropbox folder to store all my Zettelkasten files, which I can access from any computer.
