Well, my first glitch with using my TW html file on multiple computers....hope someone can please advise.....

Wednesday, before leaving work on my Win10 laptop running Chrome browser, I emailed a copy of my TW html file to my personal email, so that I could use file on my MacBookPro (MBP) at home on Firefox (FF).

The html file opened OK on MBP/FF and did some updating to file. Saved file and then last night emailed html file to my work address.

Tried opening the html file in Chrome and get following error message:

    Internal JavaScript Error

Well, this is embarrassing. It is recommended that you restart TiddlyWiki by refreshing your browser

    Script error.

I tried refreshing browser, but still no go.....get same error message......

I updated javascript setting to specifically allow address to my TW file....but no go....

I tried opening the TW file I saved on work computer on Wednesday and it opens up OK.

Dang! Thought I had a simple solution to using TW on my various computers....

    Any suggestions???

    Thanks!

Based on these, it seems that you know the correct process of saving, i.e. you did not save the wiki via the File -> Save as ... menu item, but with the check mark on the sidebar, which is good.

Saved file and then last night emailed html file to my work address.

It looks like you've made some changes here that have caused the wiki to "crash". Have you installed any plugins? Or did you create / import a tiddler with a tag named "$:/tags/..."?

Different browser and operating system versions don’t usually affect Tiddly because its developer pays a lot of attention to compatibility.

I help as much as I can, but if you’re really interested in TiddlyWiki and have other questions about it, I recommend the TiddlyWiki Google Group because it’s really a very helpful, friendly community (many of them are actually familiar with the Zettelkasten approach).

If no plugin or special tiddler caused the problem, sometimes this solution works:

Simply drag-n-drop the HTML file into the https://tiddlywiki.com/empty.html page (drag your file to the top of the page; if a green "Drop here" bar appears, release it), then press the Import button and save the wiki.

This "empties the cache", "deletes temporary files", so it results in a kind of cleanup.

  • Thank you, bimlas for your help!

Will try this out and see what happens....and report back.

  • I just checked TW file that I modified on MacBookPro with Firefox before emailing to myself at work computer.

Per TW video, I did create a tiddler with a tag "$:/tags/Sidebar to get a new tab in in the right hand side pane, and in the type field, selected "text/x-markdown" and below that in fields put "list-before" and to the right of that "$:/core/ui/SideBar/Open".

    Could this be the problem?

    Thanks,

So you can open the original file, but not the copy you sent in the email? Try downloading the https://tiddlywiki.com/ wiki the same way you did with your own wiki and email it. If the error is also present with this file, there may be a problem with the process of sending the e-mail.

Can you share the video? It would be best if you could include the sidebar as well, because maybe some block is not closed in it and that is causing the error.

Per TW video, I did create a tiddler with a tag "$:/tags/Sidebar to get a new tab in in the right hand side pane, and in the type field, selected "text/x-markdown" and below that in fields put "list-before" and to the right of that "$:/core/ui/SideBar/Open".

This should not be a problem. If I understand correctly, you are using the Stroll edition. Did you also install a Markdown plugin? Without it, "text/x-markdown" doesn't really do anything, because basically TiddlyWiki doesn't support Markdown syntax, it can only display it correctly with an additional plugin (see https://tiddlywiki.com/#Installing a plugin from the plugin library -> Standalone Configuration for details, there is a Markdown plugin in the list, install it).

  • On My MacBookPro at home:

I can open the TW file that I modified in Firefox AND in Chrome that I installed yesterday.

On My HP Laptop (Win 10) at work:

I get javascript error message when trying to load the TW file that I modified at home and then emailed to myself at work.

    TW Video:

Video Tutorial is #2 by Francis Meetze on YouTube:

    Stroll

Yes, I installed the markdown plugin.

    Thanks for your help, bimlas!

    Hope this helps clarify!

  • Sorry, wrong video URL!

This should be the correct one!

  • I'm sorry, but I couldn't reproduce the error, everything works fine for me.

The interesting thing is that the same file cannot cause an error in the same browser, even if the operating system is different. Can you try downloading the e-mail attached wiki to your MacBookPro and opening it there? If the operating system is causing the error, it should open on your Mac without any problems. If, on the other hand, you're having the same error on your Mac as you has on Winodws, then you've either had trouble sending mail, or you accidentally sent yourself a "broken" wiki.

On Windows 10, when you see the error, right-click on the page -> Inspect element -> switch to the Console tab and take a screenshot of it, or if you don't know how to do it, just copy the red text because it shows additional troubleshooting tips.

  • Thanks again for your help, bimlas!

I just tried downloading the file again that I had sent to my work and opening it on my MBP. It opens up OK in both Firefox and Chrome.

I will resend the file again to my work and try opening the resent file in on work computer with Chrome/Win10. Will report back tomorrow, Monday morning with results and if error, the info you mention.

    Thanks!

  • At work now.....tried opening the html file that I resent in Chrome on work laptop.

At first it showed 'Loading' on the screen in large gray letters, then letters start turning green from left to right.....then the red error message shows up on screen.

Here's screenshot of error message and other info.

I just tried your suggestion to drag-n-drop the HTML file into the empty file. After I dropped it, I got the same error message as before and shown in my prior post.

  • Oops, didn't have the correct tab open....here's new screenshot, that should help.....

  • Oops, didn't have the first error message open....

Here's new screenshot with that error open showing one line of text under the heading in red text 'Script Error'. Maybe this is helpful info?

  • Just realized it might be easier to read the console text with this screenshot:

  • And here's some screenshots from the TW file that I was last able to open on my workplace computer.

Thinking it's probably wise if I start from a new fresh TW file and this time, only add one plugin at a time, so that I can see that it works on both computers and being able to easily know which plugin caused an issue, if any arise.

And further down in the list:

And here's a view of the TW page:

  • UPDATE

    FINALLY!

Per suggestion from someone over at the TW google group, I successfully opened the TW file I emailed myself at work.

The trick is to zip the TW file and then email it. That's it!

    B)

    Thanks for all the help.
