My first short definition, the first line into my Zettelkasten note, is:

"A Zettelkasten is known as a personal tool for thinking and writing.
Better for me, a Zettelkasten is a personal practice for learningthinking, and finally accomplish something valuable from thought and knowledge"

This is represented as a quote.

In my idea Zettelkasten is not only the tool but the whole of concepts, models, principles, the physical implementation, my mind and my daily practice too. Tool is only a part of Zettelkasten.
And Writing is only one of the many purposes and reasons of existence of my Zettekasten.
Maintaining the two "versions" close together always makes the slight difference between the widespread idea and my personal idea evident.

After that quote I add, as further explanation, translated from italian (its meaning could be as not accurate as I mean):

I define Zettelkasten as the thinking system, of which I am a part myself, which I set up thanks to a framework centered on the concept of Slip Box, designed, built and used with the aim of developing thinking, developing knowledge and obtaining value from these practices.
I create the required framework by identifying and selecting some concepts, models and principles (emerging or inspired by what are recognized as widespread reference implementations) which I then harmonize, integrate and structure together in a workflow that I use to transform incoming information and cognitive practice into the development of knowledge and value production thanks to knowledge

After this definition, I further specify Into my note that with Zettelkasten I can refer, at the same time:

    • to the concept of whole thinking system (the default meaning) ===> "Zettelkasten"
    • to my own whole thinking system ===> "My Zettelkasten"
    • to one of the components of the system, the framework I've created for building my system ===> "My Zettelkasten Framework"
    • to the models I've used as reference, as the Luhman implementation, or an asbract model described in any tutorial ===> "Luhman Zettelkasten Model", "Abstract Zettelkasten Model"
    • to the implementations of other users, like mine: ===> "Edmund Zettelkasten"

So, the closest option to my idea of Zettelkasten is a Personal Knowledge Management System. It's personal, it's a system, deals with knowledge :-)
But maybe it isn't a perfect mapping with the conventional meaning of PKM

@andang76 : It's a good idea to see the difference between:

    • Luhmann's Zettelkasten (object)
    • Abstract Zettelkasten (class)
    • Edmund's Zettelkasten (object)
    • Adang's Zettelkasten (object)
    • ...

And it's worth to find the different attributes in these models. Here is a draft version with seven definitions from different sources: https://forum.zettelkasten.de/discussion/comment/22763/#Comment_22763
