Zettelkasten Forum

Newbie Question

Hi,

I have opted for paper method. With the "reference box" and the "main box" boxes as in the youtube video titled "Zettelkasten Note-Taking Method: Simply Explained" by Shu Omi.

Does the adress extend "globally" over both boxes?

Has anyone thought about a github zettelkasten (ie a collabarative one) for a specific context? or maybe no context? Seems to me that that is what science is but with their specific methodology etc journals specialised language?

Kind Regards,

I'm not sure what you mean by an "address extend[ed] "globally" over both boxes?"

The 'reference box" Shu talks about is a physical box that contains references and bibliographical data. A reference manager. Part of the zettelkasten; it supports but not the main web of ideas.

If I were to use this method, I'd put the biblio information on the card for the "reference box" with a citation key on it and place it in the "reference box" alphabetically by the cite key. I'd be sure to put the appropriate cite key on the card that went in the "main box". This is how digital reference managers like Zotero and BibDesk work.

My zettelkasten is for my ideas, not the ideas of others. I don’t want to waste my time tinkering with my ZK; I’d rather dive into the work itself. My peak cognition is behind me. One day soon, I will read my last book, write my last note, eat my last meal, and kiss my sweetie for the last time.

@papertank I would strongly advise you to read the many articles on the blog: https://zettelkasten.de/. These explain just about anything you could want to know about the method. Be aware that various people have made personal adaptations of the method, sometimes using their own terminology, so terms like "address" may well not be recognised by others, as they are often not part of the original method (by which I mean Luhmann's method).

As to github, a Zettelkasten is not meant to be just a repository of information, it is supposed to be a network, especially of ideas. Links are very important, and these might be very personal. A link that is worth making for one person might make little sense for another.
