Need help building my setup in obsidian.

edited January 31 in Software & Gadgets

So, I've just become familiar with Zettelkasten and I'd love to build my first setup in Obsidian. My main interests are: history, literature, georgraphy and archeology. I know that I should not create "subject" folders... How am I supposed to start? Any of you know some great YT tutorial, or it's more like I should figure it out by myself.

  • Are creating "subject" folders, such as history, or literature is a bad idea even though I'd connect the main notes?

  • Hi and welcome,

Everyone has their own way of doing it. You can get ideas from YouTube and from others here, but in the end you'll naturally develop your own system.

A folder structure isn't necessarily bad, I use one myself. It's just that you can lose the overview on what's in your Zettelkasten if things are 'buried' in multiple levels of folders. Keeping it simple is best.

In an answer to another post, I pointed out how to use the 'unique note creator' in Obsidian, so it's worth having a look at that.

I recommend taking time to look back over the history of this forum using the Categories in the sidebar. That'll help you to find other peoples techniques and experiences, and you can learn from them.

    Two recommendations:

    1) Be clear about the purpose of your setup. Why do you want to invest time in setting up a ZK? What do you expect to get out of it?

It's much easier to help, if we know what you actually want to achieve.

    2) Pick one tutorial and stick to it. There are many Zettelkasten teachers out there. They give conflicting advice. So just pick one and ignore the others.

If you enjoy zettelkasten.de, read Christian's and Sascha's blog. Follow their advice. If you have additional questions, let us know what part of their advice you need help with.
