Is there a generel issue with The Archive after MacOS 26.1 ?

The app is just hanging when I try to start it. M1 Macbook Air.

  • The Archive doesn't freeze completely for me, but it does when I switch quickly between individual notes (arrow keys). M1 MacBook Air from 2020.

I'm getting an M4 MB Air in a few days, so we'll see if it's generally due to the new OS (performance-hungry) or to The Archive.

  • Works again after reinstallation. But saved searches are gone. Changed to stable releases. It froze when trying to open my normal Archive folder.

  • Do you use iCloud Sync? macOS is acting weird since Tahoe: https://forum.zettelkasten.de/discussion/3337/the-archive-will-not-open-in-os-tahoe

I do, with all files permanent downloadet on Mac. But things works now.

  • I use Dropbox and experienced similar kinds of behavior. It took several times (booting and rebooting the Archive) before my 4,977 notes would load. All is well now, but I have reached the point where I expect this kind of behavior any time apple updates the OS. I am running 26.1. I also use Scrivener 3.5.1 and experienced similar kinds of behavior loading my long-term writing projects. Perhaps it's an issue with Dropbox.

I'm not sure it's Dropbox. I use the most recent version of Scrivener and now when I load old notes (stored on iCloud), Scrivener mis-interprets what should be there. It's most frustrating, as I have ongoing needs for taking notes for long project meetings. However, I found an equivalent functionality in NotePlan and am using that, for the present. I'm hoping the Scrivener problems will sort themselves out; I don't have the time or energy to pursue them any further.

Yea, I am not exactly sure where the problem might be. All I know is the sync behavior (complete synchronization of all files) repeats itself for both Scrivener and the Archive every time the OS gets updated.

  • Apple allowed third party cloud services to have similar system integration like iCloud -- also to force Dropbox to stop installing kernel extensions with fake macOS password prompts (nasty!). Since then, the popular cloud storage providers all suffer similar issues, especially when they try to be 'clever' and offload your files from the local computer into the cloud.

That just doesn't work with an app that requires knowledge of all your files in a folder for quick access. :(

It runs counter our philosophy of plain text, local-first, full ownership of your data. (I hate this.) Your knowledge would be just one cloud storage bug away from being wiped. And it was universally rolled out in a minor update along the past years, without fanfare, without warning. -- And with macOS getting worse at doing its job and orchestrating file access to offloaded files, people only now begin to notice.

  • @ctietze Is there some way to force your Mac to use local storage only and not store some files or folders in iCloud?

  • @GeoEng51 see the link I posted earlier, you can disable offloading (which leaves empty file husks, empty as in 0Bytes size, in place of your actual content). Otherwise, I'd suggest to use a different sync mechanism, that doesn't offer to "optimize space" on your computer. Either disable the setting, or switch to e.g. Nextcloud, which doesn't have that problem because they don't offer offloading.

For anyone who wants to disable "Optimize Mac Storage" on their Mac, I found the setting for this is buried one layer deeper when running Mac OS Tahoe (I'm on version 26.1) than on previous versions of the OS. You go into System Settings, then click on your name (top of the left panel), then click on "iCloud", then under "Saved to iCloud", click on "Drive". That gets you to a small window with an "Optimize Mac Storage" option that you can turn on or off. I would check the Apple documentation and find out exactly what that setting does before turning it on or off.

It is also possible to turn off "Desktop & Documents Folders", presumably so that those folders are local only to your computer. However - be careful - if you turn that setting off, your "old" Desktop and Documents folders are kept in iCloud, new Desktop and Documents folders are created on your computer, and you have to copy from the former to the latter if you want any of your "old" folders/files on your computer. See this link for a more detailed explanation.

This latter setting ("Desktop & Documents Folders") might be the one that really governs some of the synching issues being discussed in this post.
