[REQUEST] Selected document stays active during search

edited March 2019 in The Archive

I've found the workflow for adding linked references to have a bit of unnecessary friction. I may be missing something but it seems to me it would be really beneficial to keep the selected document active in the editor when you run a search so you can quickly grab the link to a document in the search results and then add it to the active document in the editor.

  • This is an interesting suggestion to make getting back to the note you want to expand easier!

Our planned implementation is to have simple back/forward navigation like in a web browser, so that you get around quickly.

  • I saw that on the roadmap (which BTW, thank you for the awesome transparency!)… and that functionality will be super appreciated. Still though, I'll keep my fingers crossed that something like this suggestion makes it into the app at some point!

Either way I'm seriously in love with The Archive!

  • Really excited about the back/forward navigation!

Agree!! Back/forward does do the job (especially if there’re keyboard shortcuts for it), but at some point I would love a way to break out the note i’m working on to a separate window or something (preferably via a keyboard shortcut), so that I visually can have two views side by side, one for searching for notes to retrieve/connect/update, and the other that stays active while I’m expanding, looking for different connections, thinking and making adjustments (which i would like to do simultaneously on both the expanding note and the looked up note). I’m aware I can open a note via separate textedit apps, but that comes with drawbacks, like shortcuts that does’t work etc

  • A first step is finished: back/forward navigation in v1.2.0 (Cutting Edge update channel) -- Please try it out and comment on the changes to your workflow, preferably in a new discussion! :)

What problem are trying to fix? Can you give us a use case or two?

  • Honestly I think what @kborglund suggested above (multiple windows) would be amazing… it solves all of this type of issue without a lot of complexity.

What problem are trying to fix?

Not a problem per se, just added friction.

Can you give us a use case or two?

Sure. You've got a buffer/collection note and you've got to add a bunch of references to it. You're pretty familiar with the notes so you don't need to read them all, just see the note names. You run a search. You've now got a filtered list of documents, lets say 20, and you need to add 10. As things stand now, I would end up opening Multimarkdown Composer to edit the buffer/collection note so I could grab my formatted reference links from the filtered search in TA.

If the selected document could be "pinned" somehow (like a buffer/collection note or whatever) then I can do it all from within TA.

Likewise, multiple windows would solve this issue and multiple other issues, and honestly I would much prefer multiple windows to my suggestion. I would just like a way to do all my filtering, reference grabbing, reading, and editing of ZK notes from within TA without having to move back and forth etc etc. Bottom line is when I'm using TA, I'm on a Mac with multiple massive screens, not an iPhone, so being able to easily see what I'm working on, like with multiple windows, when things get complex/complicated would be super nice. Like I said I already do this with MMDC or TextMate or whatever, but being able to do everything in TA would be really nice.

Obviously I love the simplicity of TA, it's one of the reasons I use it, love it, and pay for it… but some extra flexibility when a task gets complex would be nice.

I hope that makes sense. If not let me know what to clarify and I'm happy to do so!

    Nice B)B)B)

  • @entropic: Another way to make that easier (which makes the option of having multiple windows open at the same time far less pressing for me), is to add links to other notes with the Keyboard Maestro macro discussed in this post: https://forum.zettelkasten.de/discussion/comment/2518/#Comment_2518
That was a gamechanger for me!

@Vinho Thanks! I’m already using KM & TextExpander for a few things specific to TA, but I wasn’t using this. I’ll be adding this when I’m back at my computer.

That said, I still think multiple windows would be amazing for multiple reasons… and I’m really excited to see what @Sascha was alluding to B)

  • Just to clarify, I definitely agree with @entropic that multiple windows will definitely be welcome. My suggestion was in addition. Perhaps I should have started another topic.

@Darryl I moved your suggestion from 2 posts prior to a new discussion: https://forum.zettelkasten.de/discussion/500/request-create-buffer-note-from-selection
