Re: The under-stressed importance of a regular review practice.
Sönke Ahrens said a few things in his book that struck home as worth imitating, replicating, worth stealing, but his focus on dividing notes into arbitrary categories wasn't one of them. I use some tagging when I have a note I want to group with other notes covering a similar topic. I use tags to group notes by topic, not… -
Re: How "closely" must a slip be linked to the index?
Philosophy It depends on what you mean by "index." A structure note is an annotated index. With that as the definition, all notes, with a few minor exceptions, should be on a structure note. The difference is that there can be several indexes/structure notes, especially when a ZK grows to 3K+ notes. Having them all linked… -
Re: Identifying patterns in different types of notes, and how to optimally design outline notes
Relax, maybe too much focus on the current snapshot of your vault. After a thousand notes, things will look different. The so-called ratio between heavily linked notes and the notes with sparse links will change. After ten thousand notes, it may change again, and you’ll be frustrated with some other aspect of your vault.… -
Re: Tags vs structure notes
... For the most part, I agree that tags are redundant in a modern digital zettelkasten populated with thoughtful structure notes and sub-structure notes. Creating notes starting from an established structure note is key. When I think of structure notes, I think of an annotated TOC, not a simple listing of zettel. If I… -
Re: Understanding the difference between object tags and topic tags
> One thing to remember is that tagging is a small part of a knowledge system or 'tool for thought' so I try and not let myself get too hung up on tagging. I trust it my tagging skills will evolve and get better. And that means tagging when appropriate. In my perspective, my confusion stems from the disconnect I have when… -
Re: Newbie - wondering what is the point of tags?
@michaelamherst you are right that with the right software for your Zettelkasten, search is the most powerful tool. Tags do some work but are not quite as useful as it might seem. In the example you present, tags probably wouldn't help. But they can be helpful in small ways as your Zettelkasten grows. This is so hard to…
