[SOLVED] [REQUEST] Tab to indent list item

edited August 2021 in The Archive

As of v1.0.7, shift-tab will produce the same effect as the menu Format > Outdent Line. I would love to see tab do the opposite and indent the line.

This would be particularly useful in the context of auto-completed list so when we get the dash+space on a new line, we could hit tab to indent it.

  • That's on the task list and will be implemented after I upgrade the Markdown highlighter to MMD6

  • Has this happened already and I missed a preference setting? I've developed a Keyboard Maestro macro that will do it for me with shift-return, creating an indented list item below the current one. But I would love to be able to just hit return in a list, then hit tab, and create an indented item on the next line. I do that out of habit so I always have to go back and fix it.

  • No, not yet! The Markdown editor is being revamped and interactions like this will be part of that effort.

  • +1 for this.

  • +1 as well. I'm trying this app for the first time and loving it, but I write a lot of bulleted lists and in every other app the behavior is Tab = indent, so I'm having trouble adjusting. Thanks.

  • Actually, I just implemented this with BetterTouchTool!
    (remapped tab to cmd+]).
    Nearly two years later...
Why haven't I done this sooner?

  • There's one caveat though: when the focus is NOT in the editor, tab does nothing.

Awesome. Just implemented that. Thank you.

  • If you remap tab completely, you may also want to experiment with writing your own app shortcuts in the macOS System Preferences: https://support.apple.com/en-sa/guide/mac-help/mchlp2271/mac

Oops! My trick destroys the ability to use ctrl-tab to cycle thru open tabs. :/
Which, apparently, I use a lot more than indentation. :|

In the meantime, I'll resort to using cmd-]
    (cmd-opt-0 on my machine).

@ctietze please don't take this as impatience on my part but rather as an encouragement from an enthusiast user.

And by the way, thank you for making The Archive. B)

  • @maclm I had no problem remapping cmd-] to tab with Keyboard Maestro and it does not "destroy the ability to use ctrl-tab to cycle thru open tabs." Must be particular to BTT.

  • @Will thank you for pointing that out.
After some more tests, it now works with either KM or BTT.
    Go figure.

  • @maclm Great idea, thank you. Implemented. 👍🏻

  • This is now part of v1.7.1 (cutting edge update channel). Thanks for all your patience!
