  • I'd like to recommend yet another tool: http://www.notion.so I've switched my zettelkasten to it a while back and am moving more and more other stuff I need to keep track of to it. (See here for screenshots: https://forum.zettelkasten.de/discussion…
  • Yes, notion.so. Yes, the last two are mockups :-) But I suggested the "mural" so notion.so - and they liked it.
  • @Will There are two books on ZK in German: one by @sfast, Die Zettelkastenmethode one by Sönke Ahrens, Das Zettelkasten-Prinzip The latter one is also available in English: How to take smart notes. The books are looking at the ZK method from di…
  • @achamess No, that's https://www.notion.so. Airtable allows to define different views on tables but does not support marked-up text well. I would not use it as a knowledge store which is primarily about unstructured data. @Paul_J_Miller If a zettel…
  • @mediapathic I'm using Office Lens on my iPhone to scan single pages when I'm on the road. Office Lens is free and also does OCR. Or when I'm at home I use my trusty ScanSnap iX 500 with the accompanying software. It's fast and reliable.
  • Thx for the info, @Paul_J_Miller!
  • @Paul_J_Miller So seem to be happy with the reMarkable. Have you tried an iPad Pro, too? If so, why do you like the reMarkable more? As for reading: Reading PDFs on the reMarkable is possible. But when you annotate it with handwritten notes, can yo…
  • Thx for the link. I very much relate to what you wrote. And it reminds me of sth Ralph Ammer said: As long as feels he cannot yet draw something he thinks he hasn't understood it (or does not yet clearly see it). Writing helps thinking, drawing he…
  • Maybe this is helpful in a discussion about hierarchies vs networks: https://praxis.fortelabs.co/a-complete-guide-to-tagging-for-personal-knowledge-management/ I guess it should not be either-or, but as-well-as. Hierarchies are helpful, networks a…
  • @Will, just for the record: Notion supports working offline - as I just realised. My wifi unexpectedly went down without me noticing it while I was working in Notion. Only after 20 minutes or so I saw the "offline" notification. No data got lost; al…

  • Have had a look at DT - but did not find it convincing at that time. What intrigues me about Notion, though, is it's different approach: it's not document focused, but table focused. What you create is a just entries in tables which can be structur…

  • Thx for trying to strike a balance between TA and Notion ;-) Of course I see the current limitation of an internet connection. But then: TA is limited to the desktop, even the Mac. TA is limited to plain text. TA is limited to 2 developers. So I …

  • No, not in general. If I create a zettel I add bibliographical information as needed. Maybe the zettel revolves around a subject where two books, a print article, and several web articles are relevant. I then include references to all of them in th…
  • I'm using just a single Zettelkasten ("filing cabinet") for all zettels (notes). But within the one Zettelkasten I sometimes have zettels with just quotes or citations on them. And sometimes I'm mixing quotes and citations and my own thoughts on t…
  • "Evernote want-a-be"? Hm... I think "peak Evernote" has long since been. Evernote sure is no leader of any pack anymore. It was good at start... but long since has lost whatever advantage it had. As for simplicity, focus, pricing, features, there ar…

  • I'd like these features, too: A hastag pane (in alphabetical order) to easily filter zettels. Bear writer provides such a pane (even with hierarchical hashtags). When entering a "#" a pop-up list of hashtags which narrows down when entering charac…
  • Memory footprint is the only trait of Electron apps I'd complain. Some non-native user experience is of little concern to me, though.
  • Well, if the automatic advice of The Archive is "We recommend fixed-width fonts for editing", who am I then to violate that? But agreed, the fidelity is now better with Menlo and highlighted markup. I'll leave the non-fixed-width font. Still missin…
  • This is what I get with the "PrettyFunctional (Basic)" theme: Not very high fidelity. It's a bit better, though, when I switch to a dark theme. However: italics are not shown as italics, but just highlighted in some way. And an "embedded" rende…
  • Here's a view of the editor: The markdown is color coded and makes it easier on the eye. Compare that to (almost) the same zettel in The Archive: But more importantly I always get a "rendered" version of the note when I switch out of editing m…
  • Awesome tool! But I keep nvAlt around to sync my zettels with SimpeNote to be able to edit them on my iPhone.
  • Each paragraph might be zettel worthy ;-) But the paragraphs already come from zettels; I distill them from what's already in the zettelkasten. An article/book is a projection of zettelkasten content. For me that's primarily a unidirectional flow f…
  • I would not distinguish projects of different sizes. Small projects might grow large over time ;-) Whether I write a blog post or an article for a magazine or a book is irrelevant to me with regard to the source of my material: it all comes from th…
  • Sure no one should type JSON in any zettelkasten app. But zettelkasten apps could export their data as JSON upon request (or import from such JSON). I'm suggesting just a data exchange format. The could even be a converted taking "plain text" zett…
  • Thanks for the pointer to Auratikum. It looks like a tool for students who work project-oriented. As long as there is no export feature to get notes out of Auratikum in a standard format it sure is not fit for use as a life long zettelkasten. But…

  • I'm sorry to report: pasting from the clipboard does not work on my Mac. And dropping an image keeps it in place. That way I'd first have to move it to a proper location by hand. But also then the path used is absolute, not relative. Bummer
  • Yes, I can use the image markdown in nvALT - but it does not help me with image handling. I have to manually save images to a file and move the image to the zettelkasten by hand, instead of the tool picking the image from the clipboard (or a drag&am…
  • Thx for the hints! I like the distinction between note taking, verzetteln, and revision. Even though the other day I told my fiancee how different note taking/markup of texts ist from verzetteln, I did not realize what this means for where/when you…
  • I'd be most happy to first use "Zettel note" (instead of "smart note" or just "note"). It's doppeltgemoppelt, but also is a form of clarification: a certain type of note is meant. Like with "smart note" which refers only to specific kinds of notes, …
  • One more thought: maybe a compound like "slip note" could help? Or would that be doppeltgemoppelt?
